From his signature rhythms and rhymes to his larger-than-life personality, Chico the Virgo has been a beloved South Florida radio talent for more than 55 years. He has been and remains a trusted voice, community champion, and South Florida industry icon. Sylvester G. Wesley II, better known as “Chico the Virgo,” was born in Hollywood, Florida, and raised in Fort Lauderdale. A graduate of Stranahan High School, Chico's radio journey began in 1971 when, after two years of training under Charles Merritt, "The Mad Hatter," he was given 30 minutes of airtime at WRBD. Those 30 minutes launched what would become an extraordinary broadcasting career spanning more than 55 years. After graduating high school in 1972, Chico attended Florida Agricultural & Mechanical University (FAMU), earning a bachelor's degree in Corrections and Sociology. While in Tallahassee, he gained valuable on-air experience at WFSU on the campus of Florida State University. In 1974, legendary broadcaster Joe Bullard, "The Voice of the Famous Marching 100," invited Chico to join Tallahassee's first Black-owned radio station, WANM. From 1974 to 1978, Chico became a familiar voice in Morning Drive, Afternoon Drive, and Sunday Morning Gospel programming, further establishing himself as one of Florida's rising radio talents. Throughout his career, Chico consistently earned top ratings across numerous Florida radio stations. In 1979, he returned to Fort Lauderdale and WRBD, the station where his career began. He later achieved continued success at WPOM in West Palm Beach as Program Director, Music Director, and Morning Drive personality, and at FOXY 1040 in Delray Beach as Program Director and Morning Drive host. While at FOXY, Chico received a call from WEDR General Manager Jerry Rushin and Program Director James T., inviting him to join the renowned WEDR 99 JAMZ family. Chico spent 12 successful years as the station's popular Afternoon Drive personality. When WEDR became part of Cox Media Group, Chico's signature laid-back style, soulful voice, quick wit, and rhyming skills led him to WHQT HOT 105, where he has remained a beloved South Florida radio personality. He has now been part of the Cox Media Group and HOT 105 family for more than 27 years. Beyond the airwaves, Chico has dedicated himself to serving the community. His commitment has earned him numerous proclamations and honors from the City of Miami, Miami-Dade County, Broward County, Fort Lauderdale, West Park, Lauderhill, Lauderdale Lakes, and the United States Congress in recognition of his community service and outreach efforts. Today, Chico the Virgo remains one of South Florida's most recognized and beloved radio personalities. For more than 55 years, millions of listeners have tuned in to enjoy his unmistakable “rhythms and rhymes,” infectious personality, and genuine connection with his audience. Whether through laughter, music, inspiration, or community involvement, Chico continues to make an impact every day—and the story of "Chico the Virgo" is far from finished.
